The ship immediately began search operations, with the assistance of a nearby cruise ship, in hopes of a positive outcome. Unfortunately, the cruise line has now confirmed that the search has been called off, as it ended without success.
A search operation has begun for a passenger who is believed to have fallen overboard from the Norwegian Epic cruise ship while on its way to the Bahamas.
The incident occurred around 3 PM ET, as the ship was heading north from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, towards Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The ship had departed Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday for a seven-night Western Caribbean journey.
Passengers onboard have been sharing videos and details of the situation, confirming the incident. In one video, a passenger suggested that the person in the water might be a child, while another passenger mentioned that “a guy jumped off the boat.”
A nearby cruise ship is also heading to the location to assist in the search and rescue efforts.
The identity of the person who went overboard has not yet been released, though initial reports suggest it was a guest, not a crew member.
The crew acted quickly by launching search and rescue operations, including deploying a flare to mark the ship’s location when the “man overboard” alert was raised.
