Olivia Hussey Eisley, renowned for her role as Juliet in the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet and for her appearance in the horror classic Black Christmas, has passed away at the age of 73. The news was shared via a post on her official Instagram page.

A Peaceful Goodbye

The statement posted on her Instagram read, “With great sadness, we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who peacefully left us at home on December 27, surrounded by her loved ones. Olivia was an extraordinary person, whose warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched everyone who knew her.”

Romeo and Juliet: A Career Defining Role

Olivia Hussey’s breakthrough role came with Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, where she played the iconic role of Juliet. Her portrayal earned her a Golden Globe award. However, the film was mired in controversy. In 2022, Olivia and co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Studios, claiming they were filmed in nude scenes when they were minors (aged 15 and 16). The director reportedly told them the film would fail if they did not comply. The lawsuit was dismissed in May 2023.

Other Notable Roles

After Romeo and Juliet, Olivia starred in the 1974 horror film Black Christmas and appeared in the 1978 Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile. She also worked with Zeffirelli again in 1977, playing Mary in the TV mini-series Jesus of Nazareth.

In the 1990s, Olivia featured in several more horror films, including Psycho IV: The Beginning and the TV miniseries It, based on Stephen King’s novel. She also starred in the early 2000s in Mother Teresa, El Grito, and Tortilla Heaven.

A Life of Passion and Kindness

Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Olivia lived a life full of passion for the arts, spirituality, and compassion towards animals. Her family fondly remembered her as a person of deep warmth and wisdom.

Survived by Family and Loved Ones

Olivia leaves behind a loving family: her children Alex, Max, and India, her husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley, and her grandson, Greyson. Her family said in the statement, “She leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever be cherished in our hearts.”

A Legacy to Remember

“As we mourn this great loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s lasting impact on our lives and the industry,” the family wrote. “We thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve the loss of this truly special person.”
