Hoda Kotb Bids Emotional Goodbye to Today Show
On January 10, 2025, Hoda Kotb signed off from her anchor role on the Today show, bringing an end to her 17-year journey with the NBC morning program. Kotb had announced in September that she would be leaving after nearly two decades with the show.
An Emotional Farewell
As the show aired a tribute video to her career, Kotb fought back tears while expressing her gratitude. “I’m not even able to articulate it because I’m a mess most of the time, but I just want to say thanks,” she said. She also gave special thanks to her co-anchors, especially Carson Daly, whom she called the “secret sauce” of the show. “Without you, the show doesn’t hum,” she added.
A Heartfelt Tribute to Co-Hosts
Hoda Kotb shared personal memories with her co-anchors. She called Al Roker her “first friend” at Today and recalled how he supported her when she was unwell. She also spoke about her deep bond with Savannah Guthrie, describing her as “my person,” always there during difficult moments.
Kotb then turned to Craig Melvin, her replacement, and expressed excitement for his future on the show. “You earned this, Craig. You’re going to be fantastic,” she said, adding that she would be “dead asleep” while he takes on the role.
Special Guests and Surprises
Hoda Kotb’s farewell also included touching moments with special guests, including Maria Shriver and Simone Biles. Biles called Kotb her “Olympic mom” and expressed hope that they would meet again in Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympic Games. Kotb also had a surprise visit from Kermit the Frog, who performed “Rainbow Connection” for Kotb, her daughters, and the Today team.
Reflections on Her Decision to Leave
Kotb had announced her decision to leave the Today show in September, citing the challenges of balancing her career with her family life, especially after her daughter Hope’s medical crisis in February 2023. In her farewell letter, Kotb shared that she needed more time for her daughters and mother, and that after turning 60, she felt ready for a new chapter in her life.
What’s Next for Hoda Kotb
Though she is leaving her anchor role, Kotb plans to remain with NBC and work on special projects, including podcasts and possibly covering the Olympics. She also teased a wellness project in the works, which could include a wellness app and retreats.
Craig Melvin Takes Over
Starting on January 13, Craig Melvin will officially replace Kotb as the co-anchor of the Today show. Kotb expressed confidence in Melvin, saying, “You are made for this job,” and added that he was the “right person” for the role.
The Today show airs weekdays at 7 a.m. ET on NBC.
