According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hundreds of thousands of eggs sold at Costco stores are part of a recall due to concerns about salmonella contamination. The FDA has raised the recall of Handsome Brook Farms eggs sold in the Southeastern U.S. to the highest risk level, Category 1.
Category 1 means there is a significant risk that consuming or being exposed to the affected product could cause serious health issues or even death.
Last month, more than 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were voluntarily recalled because of potential salmonella contamination. While no illnesses were reported at the time, the recall affected eggs sold in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee at 25 Costco stores, starting from November 22, 2024.
The recall was issued by Handsome Brook Farms after they found that eggs, which were not meant for retail sale, had been mistakenly packaged and distributed in retail packaging. The company has said it is now putting in place better supply chain controls and retraining to prevent this from happening again.
The recall applies only to eggs with the Julian code 327 and a “Use By” date of January 5, 2025. No other products are affected by this recall, according to the FDA.
