Christmas day often bring a lot of last minute tasks, whether it’s buying presents or picking out final ingredients.
Many shops and offices are closed on both holidays to allow employees to spend time with family and friends. This year, Christmas Eve falls on Tuesday, December 24, and Christmas Day is on Wednesday, December 25. Before you head out, remember to check the timings of local businesses. Here’s what will be open and closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2024:
Grocery Stores
- Albertsons Companies stores (Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Randalls, Shaw’s, Vons, Tom Thumb) will remain open on Christmas Eve with reduced hours.
- Many of these stores, including Jewel-Osco, Randalls, Shaw’s, and Tom Thumb, will be closed on Christmas Day. However, some Albertsons, Safeway, ACME, and Vons stores will have adjusted hours. It’s best to check with your local store before heading out on Christmas.
- Kroger stores will generally operate on normal hours on Christmas Eve but will be closed on Christmas Day. The company also owns Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, and Foods Co.
- Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s will be open with modified hours on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Costco will be closed on Christmas Day. Sam’s Club will close at 6 pm on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day.
Retail Stores
- Walmart will close at 6 pm on Christmas Eve and be closed all day on Christmas Day.
- Target will open from 7 am to 8 pm on Christmas Eve but will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Home Depot recommends checking with your local store, but most locations will close at 5 pm on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day.
- Lowe’s will be open as usual on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Macy’s will open from 8 am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve and close on Christmas Day.
- Kohl’s will be open from 7 am to 7 pm on Christmas Eve and close on Christmas Day.
- Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will be open on Christmas Eve with limited hours and closed on Christmas Day.
Financial Centers
- Most banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule, so most teller services will be closed on Christmas Day. However, you can still use mobile banking and ATMs.
- Bank of America will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Wells Fargo will close at noon on Christmas Eve and remain closed all day on Christmas Day.
- TD Bank will also be closed on Christmas Day.
- The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will be closed on Christmas Day.
Pharmacies
- CVS Pharmacy will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but hours may be reduced. It’s best to check with your local store before visiting.
- Rite Aid will be open during regular hours on Christmas Eve but will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Walgreens will be open on Christmas Eve, and its 24-hour pharmacies will remain open. On Christmas Day, Walgreens will operate during its usual hours, but most pharmacies will be closed except for 24-hour locations and a few others.
Postal Services
- The United States Postal Service will not be sending or shipping mail on Christmas Day.
- On Christmas Eve, FedEx Express and FedEx Office will have modified hours, while FedEx Ground and Custom Critical will operate as usual. On Christmas Day, all FedEx services, except Custom Critical, will be unavailable.
- UPS will operate normally on Christmas Eve. Only limited UPS Store locations will be open on Christmas Day, and only the UPS Express Critical service will be available.
