Early Life and Education
A proud native of Washington, D.C., Ward grew up in the Marshall Heights and H Street Corridor areas of Northeast. He lived through the 1968 riots and later shared his experiences as part of News4’s 40th anniversary coverage. He attended HD Woodson High School and the University of Maryland, where he laid the foundation for his successful career.
Journalism Career
Ward’s career in journalism began in radio. He worked for notable stations such as WPFW, WAMU, and WTOP, covering major stories including the Iran-Contra hearings, the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon, and the Washington-area sniper shootings.
He later made the transition to television journalism, starting at WKBW-TV in Buffalo. In 2006, he returned to Washington, D.C., and became a key reporter for News4, gaining recognition for his excellent reporting skills.

Derrick Ward was known not only for his storytelling abilities but also for his musical talents. Whether with a pen, microphone, or guitar, he had a special ability to connect with people and leave a lasting impression.
